Some people spend their lives searching for purpose. Gardner Robinson has spent his life living it.
From the football fields of Toledo, Ohio, to serving his country as a United States Marine, to dedicating more than two decades to public safety in New York City, Gardner Robinson has built a legacy defined by service, leadership, and empowerment. Today, as the founder of Y DIVE Inc., he is creating opportunities for youth, veterans, and individuals with disabilities to discover confidence, healing, and possibility beneath the surface of the water.
A graduate of Jesup W. Scott High School, Gardner excelled as a four-year varsity football player and earned recognition as an All-City cornerback during his senior year. His commitment to excellence led him to enlist in the United States Marine Corps, where he graduated as the Series Honor Man of his platoon. During his military service, he served in multiple countries and territories, gaining experiences that would shape his lifelong commitment to discipline, leadership, and community service.
After leaving the Marines with an Honorable Discharge, Gardner continued serving others as a corrections officer in New York City. For more than 20 years, including a decade with the Emergency Service Unit as a first responder, he worked in challenging environments where courage, quick thinking, and compassion were essential every day.
Yet Gardner’s greatest impact may be happening now.
As a certified scuba instructor with credentials from NAUI, SDI, and the Handicapped Scuba Association, Gardner recognized the transformative effect diving could have on people’s lives. He saw firsthand how the underwater world could help individuals overcome fear, build confidence, improve mental wellness, and experience a sense of freedom unlike anything on land.
In 2020, he founded Y DIVE Inc. (You Develop Imagination, Vision, and Empowerment), a nonprofit organization dedicated to making scuba diving accessible to youth, military veterans, and individuals with disabilities. Through adaptive diving programs, mentorship, education, and community engagement, Y DIVE helps participants discover new possibilities while developing resilience, self-esteem, and leadership skills.
For many participants, diving is more than a recreational activity—it is a pathway to healing. Veterans find therapeutic benefits from the calming environment of the ocean. Young people gain confidence through skill-building and exploration. Individuals with physical challenges experience new levels of independence and empowerment.
Gardner’s philosophy is simple but powerful:
“If you get tired, learn to rest—not quit.”
That mindset has become the foundation of his work and the inspiration behind Y DIVE’s mission.
Beyond his nonprofit leadership, Gardner remains deeply involved in mentoring youth, supporting community programs, and encouraging others to pursue lives of purpose and service. Whether teaching scuba skills, mentoring young people, or advocating for greater accessibility in outdoor recreation, he continues to lead by example.
At Black Expertise, we celebrate Gardner Robinson not only for his impressive accomplishments but for his unwavering commitment to helping others discover what they are capable of achieving. Through Y DIVE Inc., he is proving that sometimes the greatest transformations happen when we are willing to dive into the unknown.
One dive. One person. One life changed at a time.
