Oh, SNAP

Dog Whistles are tools that communicate a racial slur, or buzz word that is associated with an ethnicity. The words apply but does not explicitly say the name of the race. Welfare Queen, persons that spend over two-hundred dollars for nails, or over two-hundred and fifty dollars for athletic shoes create a specific mental image. The mental image is a person of color. It is a safe assumption that the mental picture of a SNAP recipient is a person of color with multiple children or a person wearing expensive athletic shoes.

Surprise! According to Pew Research, non-Hispanic white adults account for forty-four-point six percent of adult SNAP recipients. Twenty-one-point five child recipients in 2020. Approximately twenty-seven of both adult and child recipients were African American. Hispanics who were of any race accounted for twenty-one point nine (adults) and thirty-five point eight are child recipients. (Desliver, 2023)

Surprise! The majority of SNAP recipients are not people of color.
